How Fluoride Treatments Work
Fluoride treatments are quick, painless, and highly effective in preventing tooth decay. It involves applying a small amount of fluoride gel, foam, or varnish to your child's teeth using a soft brush or cotton swab. The fluoride then gets left on the teeth for several minutes. Once absorbed, the fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities by making it more resistant to acids produced by bacteria in plaque and promoting remineralization.
Types of Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride can be applied or delivered in a few different ways, including:
- Topical Fluoride: Applied directly to the teeth as a gel, foam, or varnish, topical fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities.
- Systemic Fluoride: When indicated, systemic fluoride is administered orally through drops, tablets, or mouth rinses. It works by incorporating fluoride into developing teeth, making them more decay resistant.
- Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF): A liquid solution that contains fluoride and silver ions, SDF is applied directly to cavities to arrest their progression and prevent further damage. It is an excellent option for children with cavities or those unable to sit for longer dental procedures.
